Choosing Onkwehón:we Midwifery Care means you are agreeing to be responsible for being as healthy as you can be, in order to avoid preventable complications. Stressful times in our life can be made more stressful by the demands of pregnancy.
Primary Care:
Primary care means that the Onkwehón:we Midwives provide care to you and your family, which includes your prenatal visits, labour, birth and 6 weeks post partum care for you and your newborn. Your family physician will be involved in your care for non-pregnancy related issues only. Your care will be carefully monitored for signs of anything that is not normal. In the event of a potential complication, your Midwife will initiate a consultation with the appropriate specialist (i.e. Obstetrician, Paediatrician, etc.). Between 32 – 36 weeks, you will be asked to envision your birth and a birth plan will be developed. Following your final postpartum visit, a summary of your birth and care will be sent to your family physician.
Home Birth or Clinic Birth:
A home birth or clinic birth requires making a plan of what will happen in case of a complication. While the majority of women maintain their low risk status, it is possible that we may need to consult with or transfer your care to an Obstetrician at some time during your pregnancy, delivery or postpartum. Emergency transfers go to Belleville General Hospital by ambulance but, non-emergency consultations or transfers of care gives you time to go to the hospital of your choice. If the client and baby are well following the hospital birth, they are discharged early from the hospital (usually within 3-4 hours).
Hospital Birth – Planned/Transfer of Care/Cesarean Births:
Midwifery care for hospital births is a collaboration between the Obstetrician and the midwifery practice and allows us to provide Supportive Care to expecting clients and their families. Care includes routine prenatal visits, labour support and monitoring at home prior to moving into the hospital. In the event of a scheduled Caesarean Section the midwives will provide supportive care up to and including the birth and postpartum period up to 6 weeks.
We practice within the standards of practice developed by the College of Midwives of Ontario
