The Bay of Quinte region is also referred to as ‘The Birthplace.’ This is said to describe the physical shape of the Bay. Others say that this name refers to the Bay of Quinte region as the birthplace of the Peacemaker who worked to finish the League of Five Nations and help establish the Great Peace. About Us
In May 2012, with one full time Onkwehón:we midwife, Apprentice Midwife and Birth Attendant, Kenhté:ke Midwives, Kontinenhanónhnha Tsi Tkahà:nayen, “They are protecting the seeds at the Bay of Quinte” opened it’s doors to provide culturally competent care to Indigenous families living on-reserve, in urban and rural communities
Located at Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, birthplace of the Peacemaker, Kenhté:ke Midwives has operated for over six years with limited funding and access to resources. With the recent announcement of MOHLTC funding we continue to provide culturally appropriate care that sustains our way of life by birthing our children in the hands of our own people, on our land, using our language, traditions, culture and traditional medicines. It is our responsibility to ensure the protection and safety of our children and well-being of our families.

Vision
Onkwehón:we midwifery is deeply rooted in Rotinoshonni Culture.
In our society, women are the center of all things.
We have been given the ability to create;
We are life givers and nurturers;
We have responsibilities to our ancestors, our nations, clans,
communities and future generations to come.
Traditionally, women received formal instruction on all things.
It isn’t that way today…but, collectively, Onkwehón:we midwives are changing that…
‘One Birth at a Time’.
